Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay lived with her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to become creative and inspired by the arts. Her aunt was a nurse working night shifts to ensure she could spend her time to writing, reading, theater and other interests. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her time in Selma led her to write a script for a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned diplomas in English and African American studies. As studying, DuVernay began to consider producing broadcast journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to investigate the waste at the residence that belonged to a member of the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism, and she decided to pursue a career in the public relations sector. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after college. In 1999, she launched her own company of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. She also started several promotion and lifestyle networks for the urban beauty industry, including her own Urban Beauty Collective.
